Background of the Study

Hospital supply chain management (SCM) involves the processes used to plan, control, and oversee the procurement, storage, and distribution of medical supplies and equipment within healthcare institutions. Efficient supply chain management is crucial for ensuring that hospitals have the necessary resources to deliver quality patient care (Rafiu & Sani, 2023).

In Katsina State, hospitals face significant challenges in managing their supply chains, such as delays in procurement, inefficient inventory management, and the inability to track medical supplies accurately. These inefficiencies can lead to stockouts, wastage, and increased costs, ultimately affecting the quality of care provided to patients. This study assesses the efficiency of hospital SCM in Katsina State and explores ways to improve the management of medical supplies.

Statement of the Problem

The inefficiency of supply chain management in hospitals in Katsina State has contributed to frequent stockouts of essential medical supplies, delays in patient care, and increased operational costs. Limited resources, outdated systems, and poor coordination among supply chain actors exacerbate these problems. Understanding the factors that affect supply chain efficiency and implementing improvements is essential to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of healthcare services.

This study evaluates the current SCM practices in hospitals in Katsina State, identifying gaps and suggesting strategies to enhance supply chain performance.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the efficiency of supply chain management practices in hospitals in Katsina State.

2. To identify the factors influencing the efficiency of hospital SCM.

3. To propose strategies for improving supply chain management in hospitals in Katsina State.

Research Questions

1. How efficient are the supply chain management practices in hospitals in Katsina State?

2. What factors influence the efficiency of hospital supply chain management in Katsina State?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve supply chain management in hospitals in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Hospital supply chain management practices in Katsina State are inefficient.

2. Factors such as resource constraints and poor coordination significantly impact the efficiency of SCM in hospitals in Katsina State.

3. Implementing certain strategies will significantly improve the efficiency of hospital supply chain management in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on hospitals in Katsina State and examines the efficiency of their supply chain management practices. Limitations include differences in hospital size and the availability of accurate data on procurement and inventory management.

Definitions of Terms

• Supply Chain Management (SCM): The coordination and management of all activities involved in sourcing, procurement, and distribution of goods and services within an organization.

• Efficiency: The ability to perform tasks with minimal waste of time, resources, and effort while maintaining high quality.
